Biosketch

Frédéric Maatouk, PhD, is a distinguished Lebanese sociologist, researcher, and academic with extensive contributions to sociology and the social sciences. He began his tenure at the Lebanese University in 1980 as a lecturer at the Institute of Social Sciences and was promoted to the rank of professor in 1988. Dr. Maatouk later served as the Dean of the Institute, where he played a pivotal role in advancing social science education, fostering academic research, and mentoring future scholars.

Throughout his career, Dr. Maatouk has been dedicated to the study of sociology, with a particular focus on Arab social structures and intellectual thought. He is the author of Les contradictions de la sociologie arabe, a work that critically examines the complexities within contemporary Arab sociology. Additionally, he compiled the Dictionary of Sociology: English-French-Arabic, a comprehensive trilingual resource for scholars and students. In recognition of his scholarly achievements, Dr. Maatouk received the Arab Creativity Award in the Most Valuable Book category from the Arab Thought Foundation in 2017 for his work Clash of Arab Tribalism.

Dr. Maatouk holds a PhD in Social Sciences (1979) from the University of Tours, France. He also earned a BA and MA in French Literature from the University of Lyon, France, in 1973. His work continues to shape sociological discourse, contributing to a deeper understanding of social structures in Lebanon and the broader Arab world.
