Biosketch
Prof. Nayla Tamraz is a distinguished Lebanese writer, art critic, curator, and academic, currently serving as a professor of literature and art history at Saint Joseph University of Beirut (USJ) and a visiting professor at Paris 3 and Paris 1 universities. She earned her PhD in Comparative Literature from New Sorbonne University (Paris III) in 2004 and went on to chair USJ’s French Literature Department from 2008 to 2017. In 2010, she founded and has since directed the university’s MA and PhD programs in Art Criticism and Curatorial Studies, pioneering interdisciplinary approaches to the study of art and literature. Her research explores the intersections between literature and art, with a focus on history, memory, and narrative in post-war Lebanon. She has curated numerous acclaimed exhibitions, including “Le Secret” in Paris (2017), “Poetics, Politics, Places” in Argentina as part of BienalSur 2017, “Habiter les interstices: Beyrouth, les artistes et la ville” in Paris (2022), “Ways of Vanishing” at the Sursock Museum in Beirut for BienalSur 2023 and, in 2024, “Journal of Times, Journal of Present Times” at Abroyan Factory exhibition space. Recognized for her contributions to contemporary art and literature, Prof. Tamraz continues to shape discourse on art criticism and curatorial practices, fostering new dialogues in Lebanese and international cultural landscapes.
