Biosketch
Dr. William A. Zoghbi is an internationally renowned cardiologist and pioneer in cardiovascular imaging. He serves as Chair of the Department of Cardiology at Houston Methodist Hospital, Elkins Family Distinguished Chair in Cardiac Health at the Houston Methodist DeBakey Heart & Vascular Center, and Professor of Medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College and the Institute for Academic Medicine. A graduate of the American University of Beirut and Meharry Medical College, Dr. Zoghbi is recognized for his seminal contributions to noninvasive cardiac imaging, especially echocardiography, and his development of techniques for the evaluation of heart valve function and myocardial performance. He has authored more than 400 publications and trained over 150 cardiology fellows worldwide. He served as President of the American Society of Echocardiography (2008–2009), President of the American College of Cardiology (2012–2013), and on the Board of the World Heart Federation (2014–2015), where he co-chaired the Global Taskforce on Cardiovascular Disease. His advocacy efforts include representing the global cardiovascular community at the United Nations and the World Health Organization for the 25×25 initiative to reduce noncommunicable disease mortality. Among his many honors are the Richard Popp Excellence in Teaching Award (2004), the National Order of the Cedar (2012), The Research Merit Award of the InterAmerican Society of Cardiology (2013), the Ben Qurrah Award (2018), election to the Association of University Cardiologists (2018), and the ASE Meritorious Service Award (2023). Dr. Zoghbi is a Master of the American College of Cardiology (2013) and continues to shape the field through global leadership, innovation, and mentorship.
