Nomination Process
- Membership in The Lebanese Academy is achieved through a rigorous process of nomination and election.
- Eligible individuals must be proposed by Academy members, with active nominations requiring a second.
- Upon nomination, the Presidium commissions a membership council, led by the class representative, to evaluate the nominee’s background and credentials.
- Nominees must have made significant contributions to the advancement of sciences and/or arts in Lebanon to be eligible for nomination.
- The membership council assesses the nomination and provides a recommendation to the Presidium for election consideration.
- The Presidium makes the final decision on election.
Rules of Nomination
- The nomination cycle typically runs from mid-July to mid-September annually for potential election the following year.
- No Academy member may sponsor more than one nomination per year.
- Foreign members’ representation cannot exceed 10% of the total Academy membership.
Eligibility for Active Membership
- Candidates must be of Lebanese nationality, of Lebanese descent, or foreigners who have significantly contributed to the advancement of sciences and arts in Lebanon.
- They must have demonstrated meritorious original, creative, and independent investigations in the sciences and arts, along with maintaining impeccable moral standing in their profession.
- Candidates should have attained professorship or equivalent status.
- They must be under the age of 70 as of January 1 in the election year.
- Each candidate may be nominated a maximum of three times in their lifetime.
Proposers are advised against nominating candidates with questionable qualifications or re-nominating candidates whose work has seen little change over time.
Foreign elected members will be referred to as Foreign Associates of the Lebanese Academy.
